Fish Tacos - Cooking Class

The first recipe we tried out of the new Cooking Class cookbook that Mr. T got for Christmas was Fish Tacos. It was actually Bear who decided he wanted to help make this dish for supper one night. His choice worked out very well because I had already planned to make fish tacos during that week for supper and the recipe in the cookbook is very similar to the fish tacos that I make regularly. We had all the ingredients that were needed plus a few extra.

Bear was really excited to help with the cooking after he had seen this cookbook. There were many recipes that all the boys wanted to try out. The other boys were in another room with Dad while Bear and I made these fish tacos for supper, so it helped for him that it was special time with Mom. The recipe was very straightforward and simple for kids. There were plenty of pictures for each step and that made it really easy for Bear to follow. He is in Kindergarten this year and learning to read a lot, but some of the bigger words can be difficult, but the pictures helped to give the idea of what each step was about.

The steps were all simple too like mixing up the herbs and spices together on a plate and then coating the fish in the spice mix before cooking them in the pan. This is not how I usually coat fish with seasonings, but for small hands that are just learning, and maybe even my experienced hands, this was a great technique to teach. Also, we do not usually heat our tortillas for tacos, I normally just take them out of the refrigerator when I start cooking so they are room temperature a pliable by the time we eat. Bear wanted to heat them though because it was part of the recipe and all the kids enjoyed that the tortillas were warm.

Bear helped with all the steps, cooking the fish, grating the cheese, cutting the cabbage and heating the tortillas. He did a great job and was engaged the whole time. Then when it was time to eat he was super proud of himself and the supper that was on the table. Normally our picky Bear would just want to have the fish and tortilla separate on his plate with a tiny bit of cheese and probably would complain about something. This night he put fish, cheese, and cabbage INSIDE his warm tortilla and ate it all declaring how good it tasted. Everyone enjoyed the fish tacos, Hubby and I thought they were close enough to our regular fish tacos that we could follow this recipe any time the boys were excited about it.

Timing: Recipe States: doesn't say, My Actual Timing: 45 minutes with a small helper
Servings: Recipe States: 4, Servings For My Family: 5
Leftovers: Reheated fish is not our favorite.

Family Ratings:
Me: These are good fish tacos, I am happy that they are not battered and deep fried, but just seasoned.
Hubby: He thought it was funny that there was cheese with fish, but he didn't use any cheese and enjoyed the recipe.
Big Man: He ate two of the tacos, so he thought they were good.
Bear: The best fish tacos.
Mr. T: No rice please. Rice is not included in the cookbook here, but we have spinach rice with our fish tacos and I made some, not a favorite of Mr. T.

Will I repeat: Yes!

What will I change: I will add our green rice as a side with the fish tacos.
