Copycat Recipe for Fong's Egg Roll Pizza

In the past, I have posted about another one of our favorite pizzas from Fong's Pizza, the Loaded Baked Potato Pizza and that is where I posted our copycat for that recipe. Last weekend my in-laws were over for dinner because we hadn't seen them in a while and we made homemade pizza for them. We made our regular supreme pizza for the boys and then we made a copycat of the Egg Roll pizza from Fong's for ourselves and the grandparents.  Usually, I do not think pizza is pizza without tomato sauce, but it's just fun to try something different sometimes.

We started with the same crust recipe I have posted before, here. Hubby rolled it out nice and thin and then pre-baked it without toppings to make it nice and crisp. Then we followed what the restaurant's menu said had topped the pizza and did our best to duplicate it.

These are the two brands of sauces that we used for the pizza, the sweet and sour sauce as the sauce on the pizza and the sweet chili sauce as a drizzle on top.

Ingredients

-pizza crust dough
-olive oil
-sweet and sour sauce
-1/2 lb. Italian sausage
-chicken breast, chopped into small pieces
-1/2 onion, minced
-1 carrot, finely chopped
-1 stalk celery, finely chopped
-1/4 head cabbage, shredded
-fresh mozzarella cheese
-sweet chili sauce
-5 wonton wrappers, sliced

Slice the wontons into about five slices each, heat some olive oil in a pan and fry the strips. First, fry them on one side for a few seconds and then flip them over to fry briefly on the other side. Place the strips on a paper towel lined plate so they can cool. These will be used later to top the completed pizza.

In a large saucepan cook the chicken pieces and Italian sausage together.

Then add the onion, carrot, and celery to soften the veggies. When they have well softened add the cabbage to the pan for a brief minute to soften just a little bit. Then when the crust is finished with the pre-bake step cover the crust with the sweet and sour sauce just like pizza sauce. Spread the meat and vegetable mixture over the top of the sauce. Crumble the fresh mozzarella cheese on top of everything. Then drizzle the pizza with sweet chili sauce.

Bake the pizza in a 425-degree oven until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Then top with the fried wonton strips and serve.

It has a great flavor of an egg roll with the meat and vegetable on the pizza. The fried strips on wontons really help to give it that crunch you expect from the eggroll wrapper. The drizzle of sauce on top brings the flavor of dipping sauces. I would never have thought about these flavors on a pizza until I tried it at Fong's and until they build a location a bit closer to my house I'm glad that I can recreate something closely resembling those flavors at home.
